James Cook University (JCU) is Australia’s only university established to focus on the unique issues of Northern Australia and the Tropics. Our mission is to create a brighter future for life in the Tropics and beyond, through education and research that makes a difference locally, and globally.
JCU serves a uniquely diverse student body that reflects the regional, rural, and remote communities across our vast catchment. Nationally, JCU has the highest proportion of students from regional and remote areas, the second-highest proportion of Indigenous students, and one of the highest proportions of students from low socio-economic backgrounds. In 2023, 70% of our undergraduates were the first in their family to attend university, and 87% came from regional or remote locations.
