Divers for Climate Divers for Climate

Divers for Climate (DFC) is a national community of divers, ocean advocates, and marine tourism professionals working together to drive climate action for people and oceans. Our vision is a climate-resilient dive community in a thriving ocean. Our mission is to empower the dive community to influence climate action by building connections, increasing capacity, and shifting narratives so that climate solutions reflect the voices of those closest to the ocean.

Project Summary

The Climate Crew Program is a first-of-its-kind national training initiative that equips dive centres with the skills, tools, and confidence to lead on climate action and builds climate resilience across Australia’s dive industry.

The program delivers tailored climate change risk assessments to help dive centres understand risks from climate-related hazards and integrate climate resilience into daily operations. Workshops will explore and validate risks with dive operators, and support the development of practical adaptation plans that centres can implement. Climate communication and engagement workshop sessions will also be delivered to build climate knowledge across the industry so that participants can communicate confidently about climate with customers, policy makers and communities, and advocate for systemic change.

The program will engage over 300 dive professionals and more than 30 dive centres, and will equip dive operators with evidence-based tools and sector-specific knowledge to implement resilience opportunities. These insights will strengthen the voice of the dive industry and position them as a key climate ally in the lead-up to COP31. Key objectives of the program include:
1. Support dive centres to understand and assess risks from climate-related hazards
2. Empower dive centres to integrate climate resilience into everyday operations
3. Inspire the industry to lead on public engagement with climate change
4. Position dive operators as trusted voices in ocean-climate policy and media
5. Build a national network of peer-supported climate action across dive communities

Project Outcomes

The Climate Crew Program will activate a national movement within Australia’s dive industry and unlock new stories of climate leadership, told through the voices of local dive operators who experience the impacts of climate change firsthand. These stories will help position the dive industry as a visible, trusted and values-led climate ally in the lead-up to COP31, when the world’s attention will be on Australia and the Pacific – a region connected by ocean.

We’ll know we’ve succeeded when (1) Climate action becomes part of daily operations for participating dive centres, (2) operators are confidently engaging with the public and policymakers on climate, (3) a national network of climate-active dive leaders is established, (4) e dive industry is recognised as a key contributor to climate-resilient tourism and ocean policy.
With the potential of a Blue COP31 approaching, this is a unique opportunity to elevate marine tourism as a national climate leader and strengthen the broader climate movement through trusted, community-connected voices.
