Gudanji For Country Gudanji For Country

Gudanji For Country Aboriginal Corporation is a grassroots First Nations organisation established in 2021, consolidating decades of work by the Karanjini Rrumburriya clan group — custodians of Women’s Country, Marabana (Mermaid) Country.

Our leadership is intergenerational and women-led, drawing on the profound wisdom of our Elders who have safeguarded our governance systems, cultural practices and Country since time immemorial. We are a living continuum of survival, culture and care, operating at the intersection of Indigenous knowledge, environmental protection and social justice.

We are not a construct of bureaucracy. We are not a product of policy. We are the living, breathing embodiment of an ancient civilisation, still standing, still speaking for our lands and waters.

The Issues We Are Responding To:
Gudanji Country continues to be desecrated by the ongoing onslaught of extractive industries — mining, fracking, and overgrazing — compounding the devastation wrought by climate change. Our waters are poisoned. Our soils are stripped. Our kin, human and non-human alike, are under siege.

Work we are doing:
Our work tackles the many issues which we face via four main pillars - Community engagement, Political Engagement, Domestic Collaboration and International collaboration. Our current projects and future plans are outlined in our Prospectus, which we are happy to provide on request.

Project Summary

Gundanji For Country was formed to help elevate the voice of our Clan group, Karanjini Rrumburriya (part of the Gundanji nation), in speaking for and caring for our Country. As a grass roots First Nations organisation, we are fighting to protect our Country from the damaging effects of overgrazing, mining and now fracking – a continuing legacy of ongoing settler colonialism. As Custodians for our Country, we have an enduring responsibility to protect and care for it, as well as our human and non-human kin.

In fighting to protect our Country, we also aim to elevate the voices of other First Nations and their own struggles. In doing so, we hope to better inform the wider public about the need to protect Country, how they can join us in this fight and how we will all benefit from working together to protect our Country and the environment. We seek a sustainable future where we can continue to practice and share our culture and Indigenous knowledge systems with the wider community, as we walk together.

Goals:
– Stop the continued destruction of our Country through extractive industries and the gendered impacts it is having on our community, our lands, waters and non-human kin.
– Ensure that the voices of our women are heard and that we are able to continue to exercise our traditional leadership and cultural roles and responsibilities in securing a future that is led by feminist principles of a sustainable, care-based and regenerative economy.
– Cultural and political reclamation of our inherent rights, as Traditional Owners, to speak for our Country and to help empower other Traditional Owners to speak for their Country.
– Engage in meaningful reconciliation with the broader community to address the structural legacies of colonial oppression, toward transformative actions that would materially change the lives and wellbeing of Gundanji and other Indigenous Australians.
– Creating solutions to allow First Nations peoples to continue to live out on Country and preserve Indigenous practices of work and care
– Preserve Indigenous Knowledge and Indigenous Knowledge Systems and share this with the broader community.

Opportunity for Social Impact
As an organisation, we believe that we are uniquely positioned to be able to drive the change that we wish to see:
– We hold the cultural authority to speak to our group;
– We are a grassroots organisation seeking real outcomes for our community and for the broader population;
– We conduct all of our work in a manner that is strictly adherent to our principles as well as our cultural obligations, including women-led leadership; and
– Our work encompasses human rights, Indigenous rights, the rights of our non-human kin, social justice, political justice, economic justice and environmental justice.

Additionally, across Australia, there is broad support to see the successful achievement of many of the goals that we are striving forward.

Gundanji For Country is well positioned to harness this support to drive forward positive change across our society.

Project Outcomes

Some of the results that we are producing are tangible and can easily be shared through a monitoring, evaluation and learning report to our funders, whilst others will, by their very nature, remain intangible.

What is clear is that we are putting in the work, every single day, towards achieving our organisational goals as well as the goals which we share with our partner organisations.

Examples of intangible benefits and outcomes of our work:
- Ongoing dialogue with politicians at a federal level (meetings, Senate inquiries, etc)
- Ongoing collaboration (meetings, conferences, panels, committees) with many national and international organisations involved in climate actions, social justice and health
- Presentation of culture, language and spiritual well-being.
