Library For All (LFA) is dedicated to addressing the critical global issue that 40% of the population cannot access education in a language they understand. Additionally, 8 out of 10 children are not achieving basic learning outcomes. LFA’s purpose is to bridge this gap by providing culturally relevant, high-quality educational resources tailored to the needs of children in underserved communities.

Our key activities include creating and distributing digital and printed books that reflect the diverse cultural backgrounds of the communities we serve. We also focus on capacity-building through Writers' Workshops, empowering local authors and educators to contribute to our collections.

The ultimate goal is to enhance literacy, promote lifelong learning, and foster educational equity for all children, regardless of their circumstances. Our work ensures that children can learn effectively in a language they understand, ultimately promoting literacy, lifelong learning, and educational equity across the globe.

Project Summary

Library for All’s Our Yarning program is an initiative that addresses the literacy gap among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children by providing access to culturally relevant stories. Only 63.2% of First Nations children complete year 12 education, in comparison to 89% of the wider population.

The proposed project involves conducting Writers’ Workshops, empowering local First Nations communities to create stories that reflect their unique cultural heritage. These stories will be published as part of a collection that will be accessible in both printed and digital formats, ensuring wide reach and impact.

Project Outcomes

By partnering with communities, Our Yarning empowers Aboriginal communities to support the creation of resources through Writers' Workshops, sharing the stories that matter the most. Writers' Workshops are our unique tool to both gather stories for the Our Yarning collection and engage adults in the value of literacy, building holistic community support to improve children's literacy outcomes.

Your funding will help us achieve these outcomes:
Outcome 1: Conduct 2 Writers' Workshops, engaging Aboriginal communities in creating culturally relevant stories.
Outcome 2: Publish and distribute a collection of these stories, providing children with access to materials that resonate with their cultural identities and experiences.
