Cancer Council Western Australia is WA's leading cancer charity working across every aspect of every cancer. Currently, one in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. In WA alone, there are almost 14,000 new cases of cancer diagnosed each year. We're determined to change that, which is why we are working, every day to get closer to a cancer free future.
As a community-funded organisation, we rely on donations and support to deliver our work across four main pillars:
- Support: We offer a range of services to ensure no West Australian has to face cancer alone. We currently help over 33,000 people across WA each year.
- Research: We fund world-class research that targets cancer from every angle. Since our research funding program began in 1963, we've contributed over $65M to 1307 local research projects.
- Prevention: We know that preventing cancer is one of the most effective ways of creating a cancer free future. We develop and deliver programs such as Live Lighter, Make Smoking History, SunSmart and Find Cancer Early that encourage and empower people to lead healthier lifestyles to help reduce their cancer risk.
- Advocacy: We work with the community to change laws and policies to reduce cancer risks and improve cancer care.
An investment in Cancer Council WA's programs and services is an investment in the community you live in. Thank you for helping us support all West Australians, to ensure no one has to face cancer alone.
Project Summary
A cancer diagnosis can have massive impacts on a person's emotional wellbeing, which can impact their ability to undergo treatment or manage with day-to-day life. Our counselling program is designed to support all West Australians – including patients, their carers and loved ones – who have been affected by a cancer diagnosis, to promote better wellbeing and treatment outcomes.
Cancer Council WA's Counselling service connects cancer patients, their families, and carers with our excellent network of counsellors across Western Australia, offering up to four free counselling sessions per person. All counsellors in our network are experienced and have expertise surrounding issues like anxiety, depression, relationships, family, and adjustment in the context of cancer. Each counsellor also offers face-to-face and online videoconferencing, including Telehealth, to ensure we can support all West Australians in regional, rural and remote locations as well as in the metropolitan area. We have counsellors suitable for a range of ages, as well as play therapy for children. With your support, we will continue being able to offer this free service to West Australians affected by cancer over the year to come ensuring no one has to face cancer alone.
Project Outcomes
By being able to continue providing free Counselling sessions, we will endeavour to ensure that experienced, cancer-specific counselling is financially accessible for as many people as possible, promoting two key outcomes.
Firstly, people affected by cancer will report reduced feelings of distress. Following a cancer diagnosis, distress extends along a continuum, ranging from feelings of vulnerability, sadness, and fear, up to problems that can become disabling such as depression, anxiety, panic, and social isolation. Untreated distress can result in poorer adherence to treatment recommendations, satisfaction with care and quality of life.
By sharing their thoughts and feelings with a professional counsellor, those affected by cancer can explore what is happening in their lives. By addressing the issues that have arisen, people can discover possible solutions and help develop skills that can be incorporated into daily life. This will in turn produce benefits such as reducing distress and anxiety and improving coping abilities and overall wellbeing.
Through our Counselling program we aim to ensure that more people feel supported during their cancer journey, or as they support a loved one through cancer, promoting better health and wellbeing for all.
