Project Summary

Possible Dreams International (PDI) is seeking $33,650 AUD over 1 year to deliver our Lubombo Sustainability Project (LSP) to support impoverished families in rural communities within the Eastern Lubombo region of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland).

Lubombo Region is one of the most impoverished and dry areas in the country. Prolonged dry spells in recent years have seen substantial declines in crop harvests, leading to high food prices, reduced income opportunities and high levels of food insecurity. The most recent Integrated Food Security Phase Classification for Lubombo Region showed that 25% of the population faces Phase 3 (crisis) or higher levels of food security. Further, 20% of the population of Lubombo Region currently do not have access to a toilet, with most families living in mud huts without running water, electricity or proper sanitation.

The LSP will provide essential food relief and improve sanitation for up to 390 individuals, including:
1. Basic food provision for 32 families (up to 210 individuals) through the growth and cultivation of staple crops at our local Sitsatsaweni farm, distributed to families monthly as food relief packages via our ‘Mealie Meal’ program; and
2. Improving sanitation and dignity for a further 30 families (up to 180 individuals) by constructing much-needed toilets/pit-latrines in their homes.

We currently rely on fluctuating corporate and private donations to implement and/or scale up these projects. With this grant funding, PDI can guarantee the delivery of two of our most essential direct aid programs for local families for the next 12 months.

Project Outcomes

The LSP will provide food, sanitation and dignity to over 390 individuals which includes:
- Planting, harvesting and then distributing crops from our Sitsatsaweni farm and feed up to 210 people per month for up to 9 months
- Construct 30 pit latrines for families across Lubombo Region who do not currently have such facilities in their home.
