Lucy's Project Lucy's Project

Lucy's Project creates permanent systemic change to reduce incidences of violence against people and animals experiencing domestic and family abuse. We remove the unnecessary roadblocks to safety by highlighting the link between animal abuse and increased risk to human life in the presence of domestic violence. We do this through our four pillared approach, CARE. Collaboration- bringing together a network of human and animal services to proactively improve safety outcomes. Advocacy and Awareness raising- Speaking truth to power, highlighting the issues and their solutions. Research- improving understanding of the key issues and impact. Education- our education program is unique, empowering and delivered across a range of sectors to enhance and share up to the minute resources, information and safety planning tools to reduce the impact of domestic and family violence on people and animals. Did you know that an abuser of animals is statistically more likely to commit the most dangerous forms of physical violence including murder? Whilst we recognise the human animal bond and clearly state that animals are victims in their own right, we all need to know that where an animal is at risk of violence, a human life is at risk as well. We are a national ACNC charity, with DGR1 status. Whilst our work is in high demand and we are respected nationally and internationally as the premier subject matter experts, we urgently need core operational funding to continue. We are credited with changing laws, policy and best practices nationally. Help us end the violence.

Project Summary

We have a cutting-edge education program ready to be delivered to service providers, lawyers, veterinarians and others who are at the frontline of domestic and family violence and needing assistance with supporting people with animals.

We need funds to develop the education into a fee for service program to become a self-supporting organisation and able to fund our other work. This education saves lives and is highly regarded. We need to promote, market and develop the sales plan to ensure we can get the training to as many people nationally as possible.

Project Outcomes

Veterinarians, lawyers and frontline domestic and family violence workers often feel disempowered, overwhelmed and unsure what to do when a person experiencing violence has an animal in their care or reports violence to the animal. Our education offers practical tips to recognise, respond and refer as well as being prepared in the moment for a crisis involving animals.
If we can offer the education to training institutions, frontline services and family lawyers, we will know that the legislative reforms, best practices and referral pathways are known and being used effectively in the field. This will remove unnecessary roadblocks to safety and improve outcomes. Ultimately, the goal is to save lives.
