Foodbank Australia is the national organisation behind Foodbank, a not-for-profit, non-denominational, federated organisation providing food relief in every state and territory in Australia. Our vision is an Australia without hunger because we believe everyone should have access to good food. Our mission is to provide healthy, nutritious meals to everyday Australians going without, contributing to improved physical health, increased emotional wellbeing, reduced isolation, and better stronger, relationships across communities. We do this by enabling the state Foodbanks to achieve excellence in foodbanking through our national programs, sourcing and distributing food and groceries; promoting community awareness of the problem; and advocating for better solutions.
Project Summary
Our National Food Program addresses the challenge of food insecurity to deliver meals to Australians in need. This innovative initiative, built on strong partnerships with food and grocery providers, ensures the acquisition of essential foods through purchasing items at wholesale or preferential prices and collaborating with food companies and their suppliers to manufacture items at little or no cost to Foodbank.
Ensuring Foodbank’s access to a consistent and economical supply of essential high-demand staple items, such as milk, rice, pasta, pasta sauce, meal bases, coffee, cereal, meat, tinned fruits, and vegetables, is crucial. Traditional food rescue channels often fall short in providing enough of these products due to their highly efficient supply chains, minimal waste, long shelf lives, and predictable demand, resulting in fewer surplus items.
Through the National Food Program, we can secure $5 worth of food (retail value) for every $1 invested. This ensures a reliable supply of diverse, convenient, nutritionally valuable, and culturally appropriate foods. This approach guarantees that essential items are always available for families, individuals with special needs, and school children.
Project Outcomes
Increase the availability of nutritious food to charity partners, hubs and schools to increase household access to food, resulting in improved wellbeing.
