Seed Indigenous Youth Climate Network (Seed Mob) Seed Indigenous Youth Climate Network (Seed Mob)

Seed is Australia’s first and only First Nations youth-led climate justice organisation.

Mission: We are building a movement led by and for First Nations young people to protect our Country, culture, and communities from the causes and impacts of climate change.

Vision: Our vision will be for a strong and connected network of First Nations young people who will be empowered and leading the fight for climate justice.

We will work to secure a permanent nationwide ban fracking, starting with state and territory bans, beginning in the Kimberley.

We will maintain non-partisan support for a just transition away from fossil fuels and will demand investment into First Nations-led climate solutions, ensuring Indigenous leadership will be key in shaping the future of climate action.

We will work with and advocate for frontline communities to be properly resourced for climate adaptation, mitigation, and preparedness, prioritising Northern Australia.

Our Key Pillars of Work:
1) Mobilising Our Movement of Young People
2) Leading Campaigns to Protect Country & Fight for Climate Justice
3) Elevating First Nations Voices & Leadership
4) Building Our Legacy

Indigenous leadership is crucial to addressing the climate crisis. Our people are on the frontlines of its impacts and fossil fuel extraction, and we hold the knowledge and solutions to lead change. With over half of Australia’s Indigenous population under 25, it’s critical to invest in the leadership of those with the most at stake to build solutions that work towards justice for all.

Project Summary

In October 2025, we will be hosting two youth-led volunteer summits – one in Boorloo/Perth and one in Gimuy/Cairns, and we would love your support to bring these to life.

Right now, decisions are being made about fossil fuel expansion on Country, in places like the Kimberley, Beetaloo Basin, and Queensland gas fields. Young mob are rising to meet this moment with strength, urgency, and vision. These summits are about coming together to build power, protect what we love, and demand the change our communities need.

Across 3 days, volunteers will take part in peer-led workshops, discussions and planning sessions. These will all be catered to the different levels of experience, so that everyone attending has a meaningful experience. Example workshops and discussion topics include:

  • Climate Justice for First Nations people.
  • The story of Seed.
  • Landscape analysis.
  • Telling your personal narrative.
  • Campaign strategy.
  • Building a movement.
  • Politics 101.
  • and Planning to take action.

We will also invite powerful speakers to join (i.e. frontline community leaders, Elders and other youth organisers) and incorporate cultural activities, ceremony and healing spaces to ensure the summits are grounded in cultural strength.

Finally, COP30 & 31 will also be a big focus in the lead up to and during these summits. We will engage with young mob and their communities around what their key demands are and making sure there is space in these summits to identify common themes, creating a cohesive set of demands led by Seed’s young people.

Project Outcomes

Our expected outcomes include:
* A total of 50-60 volunteers aged between 15-35 attend both summits (25-30 at each).

* Approximately 10x place-based trainings are held in Northern Australia in the lead up to these summits; to support recruitment and consultation around COP.

*Workshops and trainings are refreshed to incorporate current landscapes and local knowledge

* Volunteers self-report an increase of knowledge and transferable skills in leadership, communications, organising and campaigning.

* Clear plans and goals are set to build local groups, run campaigns and raise awareness about climate justice. Note that a key focus of the Boorloo summit will be on extractive industries; whilst Gimuy will focus more on climate adaptation, mitigation and preparedness.

* Connections are built between like minded young people, building their interpersonal skills and increasing their sense of hope and optimism that they can effect change in their community.

* A cohesive set of demands are co-created with volunteers ahead of COP.

* Post-summit, volunteers are supported through online and in-person spaces, resources and meaningful pathways to step up into their leadership.

We will measure our success by: the commitment of participants to engage in ongoing climate justice activities with Seed; their self-reported increase in confidence and expanded skill set to lead climate campaigns as a result; the number of volunteers who ‘step up’ into leadership positions; the number of plans and events rolled out across communities after the trainings; and the number of new sign ups in each local area to Seed’s volunteer network.
