Project Summary
Our project is dedicated to supporting children’s literacy development in four rural Ugandan schools, where access to essential reading and writing resources is limited. We recognise the profound impact that illiteracy can have on a child’s prospects, often perpetuating cycles of poverty. To address this, we provide solar-powered tablets equipped with 750 e-books and interactive educational activities, ensuring that children in these underserved communities can develop strong literacy skills, even in the absence of electrical infrastructure.
Our team oversees the deployment and management of these devices within classrooms, making sure they are effectively integrated into daily lessons. The tablets operate without internet access, making them especially suited for remote locations. We also offer teachers digital resources and targeted training, empowering them to enhance their teaching practices and better support young learners’ literacy journeys.
As an Australian charity with a twelve-year track record in the region, we are committed to maintaining robust governance and project management. We believe that fostering reading habits from an early age can transform lives, opening doors to improved educational outcomes, increased opportunities, and stronger communities for generations to come.
The project will support 8600 children to learn to read over the next 3 years in 29 classrooms.
Project Outcomes
This project aims to create measurable and lasting improvements in children’s literacy across four rural Ugandan schools. By providing solar-powered tablets loaded with 750 e-books and interactive educational content, we expect a significant increase in students’ reading proficiency, comprehension, and writing skills, even in areas lacking reliable electricity or internet. The integration of these devices into classroom routines will not only enhance students’ engagement but also foster a love of reading from an early age.
Teacher training and access to digital resources will lead to more effective, learner-centred instruction, equipping educators with new strategies for supporting struggling readers and writers. Over time, improved literacy rates are anticipated to contribute to higher school retention and progression rates, as well as greater student confidence and participation.
On a broader scale, we expect this initiative to help break the cycle of poverty by equipping children with foundational skills that expand their future educational and vocational opportunities. As literacy improves, families and communities will also benefit from increased knowledge and empowerment, laying the groundwork for stronger, more resilient societies. Ultimately, our project seeks to transform both individual lives and the prospects of entire communities for generations to come.
