The SELLEN is a not-for-profit, charitable organisation that works strategically to build partnerships that broaden the opportunities available for young people (aged 10 to 19) to complete education and transition through school to work, particularly those that are highly vulnerable and disadvantaged.

Our Vision: We believe every young person is entitled to equal access to meaningful education and employment to maximise their potential.

Our Mission: We develop strategies and facilitate initiatives through private, public and community partnerships, to empower young people to engage in education assisting them to achieve smooth transitions and improved life chances.

Our Purpose: To improve educational and employment outcomes for all young people, prioritising vulnerable young people. We will achieve Our Purpose through the facilitation and coordination of partnerships that deliver support to young people (and their families and carers) experiencing poverty, distress or disadvantage within the cities of Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia Shire.

Project Summary

Young Mothers Transition Program (YMTP) is a comprehensive service for young mothers aged 15 to 22 comprising a practice model underpinned by early intervention and integrated care.

The progam is aimed at improving health and wellbeing through a co-designed education to employment plan that builds healthy self-care practices, access to mental health and other health services, engagement in education, undertaking parenting skills and life skills training, linking with family services and other support agencies, undertaking activities and strategies that encourage active participation, assisting them to secure employment and a better future. The program comprises 2 x tertiary qualified and experienced Wellbeing & Transition Coaches that work alongside each young mothers to assess, map, review and action steps toward achieving good health outcomes, completing Year 12 and successfully transitioning to further education or employment.

The Southeast Region has 1110 young parents (Census 2016) aged between 13 and 20 without Year 12, and no service or program capable of meeting their health and wellbeing needs and engaging them back into education. Young Mothers Transition Program (YMTP) is a prevention model that addresses health and wellbeing in preparation for returning to complete Year 12.

Project Outcomes

YMTP is a conduit for young mothers to find meaningful employment and ensure a better future for themselves and their children, through a multi-disciplinary and multi-generational approach to build resilience, ensuring accessibility of services that is culturally appropriate. Young mothers need social and peer support and a safe place. In response to identified need for wellbeing and health support of young mothers, we launched YMTP in 2021 to bridge the gap for them in accessing the supports they require to engage in education.

Health and wellbeing need of young mothers continues to accelerate and the risk factors for young mothers still include:
- Significantly higher complication rates during pregnancy and delivery, and higher rates of postnatal depression.
- Not completing school resulting in long term unemployment, welfare dependency and poverty.
- Anxiety, depression and other mental health problems
- Vulnerability to becoming involved in unhealthy relationships.

YMTP aims to reduce teenage pregnancy with:
- Quality sex and relationships education – accurate information, skills in decision-making, assertiveness, negotiation, life skills.
- Supporting young mothers to remain connected with education, tutoring and support, career counseling, employment & community involvement.
- Access to confidential contraception services, providing counselling, contraceptives and care.

YMTP supports healthy pregnancies with:
- Multidisciplinary antenatal clinics
- Physical & psychological support
- Informed decision making
- Peer groups
- Early parenting skills and knowledge

YMTP supports young mothers and their children with:
- Postnatal support, centre based, education based and home MCH visits
- Full service access to advice, knowledge and information on health, education and employment
- Returning to school or re-entering workforce, reducing the likelihood of child protection notifications

Young mothers have a co-designed pathway plan that ensures they successfully transition to further education, training or employment including apprenticeships and traineeships.
